As Carilion Clinic embarks on its initiative to develop a state-of-the-art cancer center, the need for enhanced oncology research support infrastructure was recognized. In the world of cancer treatment, clinical trials are a critical component for advancing care and improving patient outcomes. In 2021, 50% of all clinical trials opened in the United States pertained to oncology, signifying the importance of research in this space. With the addition of oncology research personnel, Carilion Clinic is poised to dramatically increase its oncology clinical trial offerings for our community.

Carilion has made an investment in the future of cancer research at Carilion by expanding the R&D Oncology Research team to include an Oncology Research Manager, 5 Clinical Research Coordinators, a dedicated Oncology Regulatory Coordinator, and a dedicated Oncology Financial Analyst. These team members, under the leadership of Danielle Mitchell, create a support structure to expand oncology clinical trials into new therapeutic areas such as surgical oncology. Acting on Carilion’s larger mission to improve the health of the communities we serve, we are confident that this development will allow us to offer more options to our patients who need it most.
