Carilion Clinic receives $500K gift from the James M. Cox Foundation
Roanoke, VA — A $500,000 gift supporting construction of the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center has been awarded by the James M. Cox Foundation, the charitable arm of Cox Enterprises, parent company of Cox Communications, and named after the company’s founder. This transformational investment will help expand access to advanced cancer care for patients and families across Southwest Virginia.
The new 250,000-square-foot Carilion Taubman Cancer Center, projected to open in 2028, will bring comprehensive oncology services together under one roof, reduce wait times, and provide whole person care that supports patients’ physical, emotional, and social needs. The facility will also include a dedicated pediatric oncology unit, reducing the need for families to travel out of state for specialized care.
“This investment reflects a shared commitment to the health of our community,” said Mike Abbott, President of Carilion Medical Center. “With partners like the James M. Cox Foundation, we’re building a cancer center that is prepared to meet the evolving needs of our patients for generations to come.”
The James M. Cox Foundation supports nonprofits organizations that are addressing the most pressing issues facing people in the communities where Cox does business. Its support of the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center reflects a longstanding commitment to expanding access to essential health services in the communities Cox serves.
“Carilion plays an essential role in the health and wellbeing of families across Southwest Virginia, and as a longstanding local partner, we’re proud to stand alongside them as they expand access to worldclass cancer care,” said Stacie Vest, Roanoke market vice president for Cox Communications. “We’re very grateful for this generous investment from the James M. Cox Foundation as it will make a meaningful difference for patients and their loved ones, right here at home. As a member of this community, I’m excited for what this new center will bring to our region.”
